Govt asks WhatsApp to share user details to fight deepfakes, company says it will threaten privacy
WhatsApp is one of the most-used instant messaging applications in the country and every day, millions of people across the nation use the platform to connect with friends, family, colleagues etc. However, it is also a known fact that WhatsApp can also be the carrier of deepfakes and spam messages, especially when elections are around the corner. Ahead of Lok Sabha elections 2024, the Indian government is thinking about invoking a law under which WhatsApp will have to share details of the first sender of messages. This is being done to fight deepfakes being circulated on the platform. read more
